Three Girls by Hazel Hall

Three Girls by Hazel Hall Poem “Three Girls” by Hazel Hall Three school-girls pass this way each day: Two of them go in the fluttery way Of girls, with all that girlhood buys; But one goes with a dream in her eyes, Two of them have the eyes of girls Whose hair is learning scorn of curls, But the eyes of one are like wide doors Opening out on misted shores. And they will go as they go to-day On ...
“June” by Douglas Malloch
Переглядів 2021 день тому
Welcome to the month of June. What better way to celebrate than with poetry. I have chosen a poem by Douglas Malloch (May 5, 1877 - July 2, 1938) which is dedicated to the month of June. The poem is entitled simply, “June.” June by Douglas Malloch I knew that you were coming, June, I knew that you were coming! Among the alders by the stream I heard a partridge drumming; I heard a partridge drum...
Project 2024 Reading Faust by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Переглядів 921 день тому
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s “Faust” is a literary masterpiece that has captured the imagination of readers for over two centuries. This epic drama delves into profound philosophical questions, presenting an exploration of themes such as the nature of good and evil, the pursuit of knowledge, and the complexities of the human condition. The play’s multi-dimensional and thought-provoking characte...
Desiderata
Переглядів 221 день тому
I recall the first time I read the prose poem, Desiderata. I was 15 when I came across a poster with the words of Desiderata written in calligraphy. That moment left a lasting impression on me. It was the time of the hippie subculture, also known as the flower people. I wore granny glasses, a floppy felt hat (I wish I still had that hat) and dressed in long flowing garments like bell bottoms an...

Welcome to Rebecca's Reading Room, It is said that sometimes the universe works in mysterious ways, guiding us towards the things we need, including books. Whether it’s a recommendation from a friend, a book that seems to jump off the shelf, or a topic that keeps coming up in conversation, these serendipitous moments can lead us to meaningful reads. Welcome to My Reading Room

The Power of Reading Spaces A reading room is a designated space in a home or public area specifically designed for reading and quiet contemplation. It typically contains comfortable seating, good lighting, and shelves for books. My definition of a reading room, however, is more expansive. Whenever I have a book in hand, I am in reading room. Taking a few minutes, in a busy day, to read gives m...

On the Ferry from Vancouver to Victoria, British Columbia I am travelling via BC Ferries from Vancouver (Tsawwassen) to Victoria (Swartz Bay) on a cool day with overhead clouds and a stiff breeze. Being a passenger on BC Ferries is an adventure! From the moment I step on board, I am embarking on a journey filled with breathtaking views, fresh sea air, and the excitement of exploration. Cheers to you, to the passage from winter to spring, and to Ina Coolbrith. That's a lovely poem that could be a lovely song as well.
Many thanks for your lovely comment!

I do not crave to have thee mine alone, dear Keeping thy charms within my jealous sight; Go, give the world the blessing of thy beauty, That other hearts may share of my delight! I do not ask, thy love should be mine only While others falter through the dreary night; Go, kiss the tears from some wayfarer’s vision, That other eyes may know the joy of light! Where days are sad and skies are hung with darkness, Go, send a smile that sunshine may be rife; Go, give a song, a word of kindly greeting, To ease the sorrow of some lonely life! - Otto Leland Bohanan
Thank you for adding the words. Very much appreciated.
Grieving isn’t a topic many people want to talk about so glad to see it highlighted here ❤
Many thanks for your support and encouragment, Christy!! Grieving is a difficult conversation, indeed!

They died for our freedom. Never Forget. June 6, 1944
Thank you
Love this review! I completely agree with Rebecca about this fantastic series :)
I have come across references to Walden in many things and always meant to find out more - but never did. Thank you Rebecca for bringing Walden and Thoreau's transendental reflections on the wild and simple life to me. Beautifully read with beautiful images (as always). you really cast the writer's spell over me.
Thank you, Paul, for your comments - you always make my day. I just checked my reading and found that I noted. in the video, that it was Walden by "David Henry Thoreau" when it should be "Henry David Thoreau" - Yikes! My father gifted me a copy of Walden many years ago. He appreciated the philosophy of the Transcendental Movement.
I think it is so hard to express such depth of feeling in so few words. That is a poet's art. The gardens are stunning. They lift the heart
Rain brings an awakening to the ground and everything says it is time to wake up... that is poetry in and of itself Rebecca as is the joy of being alive in one day. I think there is nothing better to aspire to than the joy of being alive for one single day. The ducks in the background the view over the park- all contributed to the atmosphere of this lovely celebratory poem which so elegantly puts into words what we mere mortals often fail to.
Well documented
Thank you for your encouraging comment! Very much appreciated!
And this is one of the reasons why Wordsworth is so revered and loved. He speaks of our losses and that golden moment accompanying the rememberence of someone you have lost. Beautifully read as always, Rebecca.
Thank you Paul. You have a marvellous way of expressing a profound emotion captured in this poem.
@@RebeccaBudd Easy, when you bring it to life like that
A touching poem- beautifully read
Thank you for your lovely comment!!
Such a beautiful garden and so well presented. You captured its transendental quality, and of course the quotes were the icing on the cake
I confess to be utterly charmed by you two. And Beowulf to boot. Well impressed!
Thank you Paul, for your lovely comment. Sarah and I have a lot of fun discussing books. Looking forward to our conversation about bards!
Thanks
So glad you enjoyed the video!

VERY NICELY READ WISH TO HEAR AGAIN AND AGAIN EXCELLENT NARRATION
Many thanks!
Interesting how the meter has been tamed in this translation. Greetings from a Rilke fan. 🌺
Thank you for your thoughtful comment, Reflector!
very enjoyable Rebecca- Loved the Handel piece at the beginning
Can you imagine if we had lost those plays! YIKES!!!
World Famous Betty's- Forget the Minster, no visit to York complete without tea and a cake there.
One Day we will meet for tea and a great conversation, Paul! Won’t that be brilliant!
@@RebeccaBudd and Maybe in Bettys too Rebecca- York or Harrogate
@@jackhughesbooks that would be lovely!!!
I only ever knew the first 2 lines- nothing else not even who write it. It is a powerful and haunting piece full of longing. Beautiful
A lovely tribute to Teagan. It deserves to be publicised for its inspirational quality- as you say a book to make you think
I love cats and quotes, Paul. Teagan’s cover book designs always attract attention. Thank you so much for your comment and for listening in!!!
I have never heard this lovely Rhyme before. Thanks you, Rebecca
I am so glad you enjoyed the poem, Paul. Eugene Field was know for his love of humour and practical jokes. He was known as the “poet of childhood.”
@@RebeccaBudd It is in the same vein as Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll- funny and deeply clever
Wow
Many thanks for your encouraging comments, Mrs. Bonifacio!!!
It is hard for a prose writer to present an argument simply. It is doubly hard for a poet, who must distill a whole argument into a few well chosen lines. Mary Jo tackled a great metaphysical question beautifully. John Dunne would be proud of what, and how, she said.
I agree wholeheartedly, Paul. Well said - "distill a whole argument into a few well chosen lines" is a challenge. Mary Jo Malo has great insight!
Lovely reading. Is there nothing you cannot do with your voice!
Remember watching the Barretts of Wimpole Street ages ago. What a great film. I find Browing's Oh to be in England such a romantic poem, full of broken hearted longing. This is a lovely poem too. It says what you feel your heart without words. Lovely background music too.
You have a wonderful way of defining emotional nuances!
Snow and blue skies - magical. Lovely words and some great advice
It was a great message to begin 2022! Hope all is well on your side of the world.
I don't think Leo meant to recommend Burton's unxepurged version of the 1001 Arabian Nights to the under 14s- It's pretty racey! Although if he did good on him. I read Last Exit to Brooklyn at the age of 13. Mind you it scared the pants off me. So perhaps that's what he intended.
#WarAndPeace2022 is a great readalong. I find it very easy to digress into other areas such as what Leo Tolstoy had on his TBR stack of books. I continue to learn, Paul!!!
What a stunning piece Rebecca
Hope you had a happy Burn's nite haggis!
Lovely words- beautifully read
I was delighted with Sarah’s Gift of recitation. I am hoping that more people will start reciting poetry. Hint Hint! Many thanks for your heartwarming comments.
A new venture? sounds good
Sarah and I have had many discussions about books over the years. Sarah decided to start a podcast a couple of years ago “The Book Dialogue.” Over the past months it has been very difficult to get together so it podcast was placed on hold. But now, we are back!! Many thanks again, Paul for your encouraging comments.
@@RebeccaBudd Rebecca knowing you and how you bring out the best in people I am sure it will be belting!
Happy New year to you and Don, Rebecca
Happy New Year! The adventures continue. All the very best of 2022 to you and Paul.
I love listening to you speak. As for the poem, so many people try to capture the magic of snow and sometimes sound trite. Longfellow does it beautifully. I's not only pleasingly lyrical, but it has a strong robust form with interwoven rhymes that match the interweaving of ideas - external nature descriptions compared and contrasted with internal brooding reflection.
I am working up courage to recite Longfellow’s poem, “Evangeline.” I appreciate your insightful comments, Paul.
@@RebeccaBudd you will do it, as you do everything, masterly
@@jackhughesbooks You hare the BEST support and encouragement. We should do a podcast on reciting our favourite poetry.
There is a lot of tenderness in this poem, Rebecca. A happy 2022 to you and to us all.
Wishing all a happy reading - Saw the BBC series and it was very good.
I know that BBC series and I have been VERY tempted to look at it but decided that is may be better if I read the book first.
@@RebeccaBudd It would be interesting to compare the series to the book after reading it. I guess knowing the book the series will seem more like an express train flying through the landscape
